Medium-wall heat shrink tubing
Medium-wall heat shrink tubing refers to types of shrink tubing composed of two layers: the tubing itself and an adhesive layer. For this reason, medium-wall heat shrink tubing was previously also referred to as dual-wall heat shrink tubing. After shrinking, medium-wall tubing has a wall thickness between 1.6 mm and 3 mm.
Properties of medium-wall heat shrink tubing
Medium-wall heat shrink tubing contains an adhesive layer on the inside. This adhesive melts when the tubing is heated during the shrinking process. The adhesive provides an even better seal, preventing moisture and dust from penetrating the tubing.
Types of adhesive layers
The adhesive layer can be produced in various ways, which are explained below:
Crosslinked polyolefin with adhesive
When a heat shrink tube is made of crosslinked polyolefin and has an added adhesive layer, it is referred to as “crosslinked polyolefin with adhesive.” In our product names, this is labelled as “With adhesive.”
Crosslinked polyolefin produced via co-extrusion with adhesive
This type means the adhesive layer is fused to the tubing during production — the adhesive and the tubing are created simultaneously through a co-extrusion process. This differs from standard crosslinked polyolefin with adhesive, where the adhesive is added afterward. In our product names, this is referred to as “With adhesive (via co-extrusion).”
Mastic coating
Shrink tubing with a mastic coating is specifically developed to prevent corrosion on metal pipes. It can also be used to protect underground cable connectors. The mastic coating is separate from the typical adhesive layer. In our product names, this type is labelled as “With adhesive (mastic coating).”
Shrink ratio
Our medium-wall heat shrink tubing is available in the following shrink ratios, depending on the type:
The shrink ratio indicates how much the tubing shrinks in diameter when heated. For example, tubing with a diameter of 6 mm and a shrink ratio of 3:1 will shrink to a diameter of 2 mm after heating.
Applications of medium-wall heat shrink tubing
Medium-wall heat shrink tubing, especially the variants with adhesive, is used in environments where the tubing must prevent moisture and dust from reaching the cable. This includes outdoor use or damp environments.
