Blanking plugs

Blanking plugs are small but essential components in electrical engineering and industrial applications. They are used to safely and professionally close unused openings in enclosures and installations. When working with systems that use cable glands, threaded openings often remain unused after modifications or when preparing for future expansions. At WKK, you will find a dedicated range of blanking plugs specifically designed to protect these openings against external influences, ensuring the integrity of your entire system.

What are blanking plugs and what is their function

Blanking plugs are protective components installed in unused threaded openings. Their primary function is to create a barrier against external factors such as dust, water, and chemicals.

Without these plugs, open holes in control cabinets or distribution panels would form direct entry points for contamination, which can lead to short circuits or corrosion of internal components.

Using blanking plugs provides several advantages:

  • Maintaining protection rating: Proper installation helps preserve IP68 or even IP69K classifications
  • Corrosion prevention: Prevents moisture ingress, reducing internal rust formation
  • Safety: Blocks accidental contact with live components and keeps out pests
  • Professional finish: Ensures a clean and high-quality appearance of installations

Materials and technical properties

The durability of a blanking solution depends strongly on the material used. The WKK range includes blanking plugs made from polyamide PA6 GF30, a glass fiber reinforced plastic known for its mechanical strength and chemical resistance.

While rubber or metal variants exist on the market, polyamide offers the best balance between durability and ease of installation for most electrical applications.

Key properties include:

  • Weather resistance: Suitable for indoor and outdoor use due to UV resistance
  • Temperature range: Reliable performance from -40°C to +100°C
  • Ease of installation: Designed for quick and straightforward mounting

Applications in practice

Blanking plugs are used wherever electrical wiring passes through enclosures or panels. They are especially important in installations designed with future expansion in mind.
For example, a distribution cabinet may be prepared with multiple openings, while only a portion is initially used. The remaining openings can be safely sealed using these plugs.

Other applications include:

  • Protection of unused openings for bolts and nuts in heavy constructions
  • Temporary blanking during transport or storage of machinery
  • Finishing of enclosures in the food industry where hygiene and IP69K resistance are critical
  • Use in machine housings and control cabinets in industrial automation

Sizes and variants for your project

To ensure proper blanking, the plug size must match the threaded opening exactly. At WKK, you can choose from a wide range of metric sizes corresponding to standard cable gland dimensions.

Available sizes include:

  • M12, M16, M20 for smaller sensors and control cables
  • M25, M32, M40 for standard power cables
  • M50, M63 for heavy industrial cabling and large openings

In addition to size options, blanking plugs are available in two standard colors:

  • Black (RAL 9005)
  • Light grey (RAL 7035)

This allows you to match the finish to the enclosure or installed cable glands for a consistent appearance.

Blanking plugs are supplied in packaging units of 50 pieces.

Frequently asked questions

Make sure the blanking plug is properly tightened and the surface around the opening is clean. When using the correct size in combination with polyamide blanking plugs, protection ratings up to IP68 or IP69K can be achieved.
Yes, they can be removed and reused if needed. Always check that the thread and blanking edge are undamaged before reuse.
Polyamide PA6 GF30 offers good chemical resistance. However, for exposure to strong acids or bases, it is recommended to verify compatibility for your specific application.
