Which cable tie length do you need? Determining the length of the cable tie

Posted on 25 October 2021
Cable ties can be used for a broad range of applications, from bundling a few electrical cables to complex cable management applications in a factory or office. To cater for all these applications, cable ties are available in a broad range of colours, materials, tensile strengths and lengths – from 8 centimetres (80mm) up to cable ties with a length of 153 centimetres (1530mm).
How do you determine the length of the cable tie that you need?
Due to the end of the cable tie being cut after the cable tie has been applied, it is not and issue when the cable tie is too long. To work as efficiently as possible, however, it is advised to buy cable ties which are not too long by a large margin – both from a cost and a waste perspective. The cable tie length that you need for your project depends on the circumference of the cables (or other items) that you want to bundle. Keep a little bit of extra length in mind, because you have to be able to tighten the cable tie as well.
Ways to calculate the correct cable tie length
To calculate the cable tie length you need, the following formula can be used:
Diameter x Pi (3,14) = Circumference
For example, when the diameter of the bundle is 4 centimetres, you get the following formula: 4cm x 3,14 = 12,56 centimetres circumference. We would, in this case, advise you to buy a cable tie with a length of at least 14 centimetres (140mm).

In addition to the length of the cable tie, the material of which the cable tie is made is of importance too.
