Butt connectors: what are they and how do they work? Read more here.

In our range you will find an extensive assortment of cable lugs, in all types, versions and sizes. Each of these cable lugs is suitable for a specific application.
What is a butt connector?
Butt connectors are used to connect the wires of two cables together. They consist of an insulating sleeve, with a copper connecting piece inside. When you strip a cable and the wires are exposed, you simply place them in the butt connector. Then you do the same at the other end of the butt connector, with the cable you want to connect to the other cable. Then you crimp the butt connector with a crimping tool (when using a regular butt connector) or heat the butt connector so that it shrinks and creates a tight connection (when using a butt connector with heat shrink tubing).
Types of butt connectors
In our range you will find two types of butt connectors:
- WKK - Butt connectors - Insulated
- WKK - Butt connectors with heat shrink tubing - Insulated - Heat shrinkable
WKK - Butt connectors - Insulated
These insulated butt connectors are available in three colors, each corresponding to a wire size:
| Color | Wire (mm²) | AWG |
| Red | 0.5 ~ 1.5 | 22 ~ 16 |
| Blue | 1.5 ~ 2.5 | 16 ~ 14 |
| Yellow | 4.0 ~ 6.0 | 12 ~ 10 |
All three variants have a length of 26 millimeters and are sold per 100 pieces. You attach them to the wires of a cable by crimping them onto the wires with a crimping tool, after sliding them into the butt connector.
WKK - Butt connectors with heat shrink tubing - Insulated - Heat shrinkable
Butt connectors with heat shrink tubing work essentially the same way as 'regular' butt connectors. However, there is one major difference in use: after you have secured the wires with a crimping tool, you heat the heat shrink tubing, creating a watertight seal.
These butt connectors are also available in three colors, with three wire sizes:
| Color | Wire (mm²) | AWG |
| Red | 0.5 ~ 1.5 | 22 ~ 16 |
| Blue | 1.5 ~ 2.5 | 16 ~ 14 |
| Yellow | 4.0 ~ 6.0 | 12 ~ 10 |
All three of our butt connectors with heat shrink tubing have a length of 35 millimeters. They are sold per 100 pieces.
How does a butt connector work?
A butt connector is simple to use. To properly connect two cables together using a butt connector, follow these steps:
- First, measure the length of half of the butt connector.
- Strip the cable to the same length. If the butt connector has a total length of 26 millimeters, then strip the cable over a length of 13 millimeters.
- Place the wires of the stripped cable in the butt connector.
- Crimp half of the copper tube in the butt connector with a crimping tool.
- Follow the four steps above also for the other cable, on the other half of the butt connector.
- Are you using a butt connector with heat shrink tubing? Then heat it after you have completed the above steps, so that the heat shrink tubing shrinks.
