Cable Ties: Usage, Removal and Connecting | WKK
Posted on 11 August 2025
Cable ties are available in a broad range of sizes and types. Some or these types have different uses and applications than others. Also, they way in which they are used may differ. Read more about how to use cable ties in our blog.
How do you use cable ties?
Cable ties are simple to use. When you want to bundle several cables, for example, you first place the cable tie against the cable bundle. Make sure that the 'flat' side of the cable tie is placed against the cable bundle. Then loop the end of the cable tie (the opposite side from the head of the cable tie) around the bundle, and insert it through the head of the cable tie until the locking barb in the head of the cable tie locks into the end. Then pull on the end of the cable tie so that it sits increasingly tighter around the bundle. Do this until the cable tie sits snugly around the bundle.
How do I release cable ties?
Regular cable ties, so cable ties with a normal closure, are suitable for single use. They can therefore only be released by breaking them. You release them by cutting them.
How do I remove a cable tie without scissors?
When you don't have scissors at hand, you can release a cable tie with a knife or pliers. When you have used a reusable cable tie, you can release it using the mechanism in the head of the cable tie.
Can you extend or lengthen cable ties?
Yes, you can extend cable ties by connecting two cable ties together. You do this simply by inserting the end of one cable tie through the head of another cable tie. Then pull the end through the head until it locks into the lower hooks of the head.
How do I connect two cable ties?
You connect two cable ties by guiding the end of one cable tie through the head of the other cable tie. Then you can guide the remaining end through the head of the other cable tie, so that you get a cable tie that is twice as long.
Are cable ties UV-resistant?
Not all cable ties are UV-resistant by default. There are two types of cable ties that are UV-resistant:
Black plastic cable ties are UV-resistant due to their black color. This makes them extremely suitable for outdoor use. Stainless steel cable ties are made of stainless steel, which also makes these cable ties UV-resistant. Both stainless steel cable ties with coating and stainless steel cable ties without coating are UV-resistant.
