Bootlace ferrules are copper tubes used to create a reliable electrical connection at the end of electrical wires. Bootlace ferrules come in many types and sizes and are used for various applications. But how do you actually use bootlace ferrules? You can read it below!
The different types of bootlace ferrules
There are two types of bootlace ferrules: insulated bootlace ferrules and uninsulated bootlace ferrules. Insulated bootlace ferrules are easy to recognize by the coloured insulating collar. Uninsulated bootlace ferrules do not have this collar. In addition, insulated bootlace ferrules are available in two variants: single and “TWIN.” Single bootlace ferrules are suitable for one cable end. If you want to bundle two cable ends into one bootlace ferrule, use the TWIN variant.
Why choose bootlace ferrules?
Bootlace ferrules are often chosen because they ensure safe contact between a cable/stranded conductors on the one hand and an electrical installation on the other. Insert the loose strands of a stripped cable into the bootlace ferrule and then crimp it. This creates a solid, safe contact between the wires and the bootlace ferrule, which you can then attach to a terminal on an installation.
What are bootlace ferrules used for?
Bootlace ferrules are used to create optimal electrical contact between the copper wires of a (stripped) cable in the core of the bootlace ferrule and the terminal that is attached to the end of the bootlace ferrule.
Bootlace ferrules are used in situations where the cable terminates, for example in an electrical installation or a terminal block. If the loose wires of a stripped cable are not bundled and protected by a bootlace ferrule, the copper strands may become damaged.
How do you use bootlace ferrules?
Using a bootlace ferrule is very simple. Follow the steps below to ensure correct use and proper performance of the bootlace ferrule:
- Strip the end of the cable so the copper strands become visible. Do not twist these strands—this can damage them.
- Then slide the copper strands into the bootlace ferrule until they almost come out the other side.
- Use a crimping tool to crimp the bootlace ferrule so it fits tightly around the copper strands. With an insulated bootlace ferrule, you crimp the tinned metal sleeve of the bootlace ferrule, not the coloured part.
- The bootlace ferrule is ready for use!
Why must a bootlace ferrule be crimped onto the end of a flexible conductor?
Using a bootlace ferrule on the end of a flexible conductor is necessary to keep the individual copper strands together, make the connection reliable, prevent damage from the terminal screw, and achieve a safer, neater installation. The sleeve provides a stable contact surface, improves conductivity, and prevents faults, reducing the risk of wire breakage.
Is a bootlace ferrule mandatory?
No, using a bootlace ferrule is not mandatory. However, we do recommend using bootlace ferrules when connecting a cable to a terminal in, for example, an electrical installation. Without a bootlace ferrule, the strands can bend and cause short circuits. Loose strands are also difficult to secure to a terminal if you do not use a bootlace ferrule. If the contact is poor, there is a risk of overheating.
Which tool do you use to crimp bootlace ferrules?
Use a crimping tool specifically designed for bootlace ferrules. Depending on the size of the bootlace ferrule you want to crimp, choose a crimping tool suitable for that size.
How do I size bootlace ferrules?
Determining which bootlace ferrule size you need is simple. Choose a bootlace ferrule with an insulating collar that is slightly larger than the cable’s diameter. For example, if the cable has a diameter of 6 millimeters, choose a bootlace ferrule with a diameter (D1) of 7.3 millimeters.
